PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
Tēnā koutou kātoa e te whānau,
A huge thank you to the whānau who brought their children along to the Jubilee celebrations at St Mary’s Church a couple of weeks ago. On behalf of our school community, I would also like to extend our heartfelt congratulations to the parish for the beautiful Jubilee Mass celebrated on Pentecost Sunday. It was a truly special occasion, filled with joy, faith, and a wonderful sense of togetherness.
We were especially proud to have our kapa haka rōpū open the Mass with waiata. It was a privilege for our tamariki to be involved in such a meaningful way — an experience we know they and their whānau will remember with pride. Thank you to everyone who supported this event, and to our parish whānau for their ongoing aroha and support of our school. We look forward to many more occasions where we can gather and celebrate as a faith community.
Yesterday we celebrated Matariki at school with a variety of fun activities inspired by the stars of Matariki. It was a special day of creativity, connection, and learning as we came together to honour the Māori New Year. Matariki is a time to reflect, share with whānau, and look ahead with hope.
If you’re looking for a way to celebrate with your whānau, head down to the Rotorua Lakefront for the Matariki Drone Show — free shows start at 8pm on Thursday 19 and Friday 20 June, with the Night Market open from 5pm–9pm both nights. Nau mai ngā hua o te tau hou Māori!
Mānawatia a Matariki A reminder that Friday 20 June is a public holiday to celebrate Matariki — the Māori New Year.
School Reports & Parent-Teacher Interviews: School reports will be sent home next Friday 27 June, our last day of Term 2. Please make sure you book a time to meet with your child’s teacher — it’s a great opportunity to check in on their progress and next learning steps. The link for booking your interview is below.

Board of Trustees Elections Coming Soon The triennial Board of Trustees elections are approaching. We invite parents and caregivers in our community to consider standing for election.
Serving on the Board is a valuable way to support our faith-based school by helping guide its mission, values, and future. It’s a chance to have your voice heard, support our tamariki, and strengthen our school whānau.
Keep an eye out for election details and prayerfully consider if you are called to serve.
Celebrating Our New Arrivals We’d like to extend a heartfelt congratulations to the families in our school community who have welcomed new babies recently and throughout the year. What a joy it is to see our St Michael’s whānau growing! We know the big siblings will be absolutely thrilled with their new roles.

A reminder that next week is our final week of Term 2, and it feels like the holidays are arriving just in time! We’ve had many of our tamariki and staff away sick over the past few weeks with some nasty bugs doing the rounds. We’re looking forward to everyone getting a chance to rest, recover, and reset for an exciting Term 3 ahead.

Health & Safety
As we move through the winter months, we want to remind everyone to stay vigilant about health and safety—both in and out of the classroom.
With winter bugs around, please keep your child at home if they are unwell, to help protect the wider school community. Also, ensure children are dressed warmly with named jackets and raincoats as the weather gets colder and wetter.
A little favour— if you’re able to send along a box of tissues to your child’s classroom, it would be much appreciated. There are lots of noses to be wiped at the moment!
Road Safety is especially important at this time of year, with darker mornings and slippery roads. Please remind your children to:
-
Use footpaths and designated crossings
-
Avoid running near the road or through car parks
-
Wait for an adult before crossing
-
Be extra careful when visibility is poor
Drivers—please slow down near the school, watch for pedestrians, and avoid parking on yellow lines or in unsafe areas.
Missing Clothing Items – Lost Property Reminder
We’ve had several items of school clothing go missing recently, even those that are clearly named. Please take a moment to check that your child has all of their own belongings and that everything is still clearly labelled.
If you come across any items at home that don’t belong to your child, we’d be grateful if you could return them to the school office.
Thank you for helping us keep our lost property under control!

Way to Play – Tauranga and Rotorua it’s your turn in June 2025!
For family/whānau, early childhood teachers, health professionals, or anyone else living or working with young children on autism spectrum.
Way to Play is a fun one-day introduction to playing joyously with a child on the autism spectrum.
Way to play has been specifically designed for people directly involved with a young autistic child. Adults are often left bewildered when trying to play with the child. The course offers some simple, easy to use, practical strategies to begin playing joyously together. Having fun playing together is the focus. Through ‘Way to Play’, we aim to help you understand why young autistic tamariki may find social interaction stressful, how to overcome that stress, and to show you the simple steps to joyful and purposeful play.
