Newsletter Week 9, Term 3

St Michael's Catholic School, Wednesday 18 September

PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE

Tēnā koutou kātoa e te whānau,

As we approach the end of Term 3, we look forward to enjoying a well-deserved break and the beautiful spring weather! It’s been an incredibly busy and exciting term, filled with amazing opportunities for our students.

Next week, our senior students are in for a treat as some will attend St Mary's production of Shrek on Tuesday. On Thursday, 26th September, we have two special events: after 9am Mass, our Young Vinnies group will be serving morning tea to our parishioners—we would love to see some of our school whānau join us at Mass. Later, at 11:30am, we will hold our School Bible Reading Competition.

Friday, 27th September, will be a day full of celebration as we honour our Patron Saint on St Michael’s Day, starting with a school liturgy in the hall. The day will be packed with fun activities for our tamariki.
It's also Teacher Appreciation Day, where we celebrate our amazing teaching staff. We are truly fortunate to have such wonderful, caring teachers at St Michael’s who strive to always put relationships first.

School will finish for the break at 2:50pm on Friday, 27th September. We wish everyone a safe and happy holiday!

Have a wonderful week whanau.
Ma te Atua koe e manaaki,

Rachael McLanachan

Grandparents' Day Reflection

What a beautiful Grandparents' Day we had! It was heartwarming to see so many grandparents come to support their grandchildren. The liturgy and performance were truly beautiful and moving, bringing a few tears to many eyes. We are so lucky that our children have such important people in their lives. Thank you to all the grandparents who joined us and made the day so special.

School Photos Update

We have had a few families inquire about the school photos taken recently. Photolife will be emailing you a code to view your child's photos before making a purchase. Please note that these codes typically take 2-4 weeks to be sent out after the photo date. We will notify you via the school app/Seesaw once the codes are sent to ensure you receive them and to help you check that they don’t end up in your email's spam folder.

Lost Property

We have received a number of lost items of clothing, many of which are unnamed. Please ensure your child’s clothing is clearly labeled so we can easily return any misplaced items to their rightful owners. We also ask that you check your child's clothing to make sure they haven't accidentally brought home someone else’s belongings.

Health & Safety

Use of the school drive through

It has come to our attention that some individuals are driving into the school grounds from the Lisa Crescent end of the driveway. To ensure the safety of all students, staff, and visitors, please use the authorized entry point via the May Road entrance, located beside the school courts. This will help improve the flow of traffic and enhance safety on the school grounds.

Please note that the drive-through option is not a designated waiting area. If your child is not yet ready, kindly drive through and re-enter the queue rather than waiting in the driveway. This will help prevent congestion and ensure smooth traffic flow

Head Lice Alert – What You Need to Know

Head lice can be a common issue in schools, but with a bit of knowledge and quick action, we can help prevent their spread. Here’s what you need to know:
  • What are head lice?
Head lice are tiny insects that live on the scalp and feed on blood. They are not harmful but can be very irritating due to itching. Lice do not jump or fly but are spread through close contact or sharing personal items like hats or brushes.
  • How to check for head lice:
Regularly check your child’s hair, especially behind the ears and at the nape of the neck, for tiny eggs (nits) or lice. The nits are small, oval, and stick to the hair shaft, while lice are tiny and move quickly. Look for scratching or discomfort as a sign.
  • Treatment options:
If you find lice, don’t worry! There are many effective treatment options available. Over-the-counter treatments or medicated shampoos are commonly used. Be sure to follow the instructions carefully and repeat the treatment after 7-10 days to ensure all eggs are removed.
  • Preventing the spread:
To reduce the risk of spreading lice, remind children not to share personal items like combs, hats, or hair accessories. If your child has lice, please inform the school so we can notify other families to check their children too (while maintaining privacy, of course).
By working together, we can help keep head lice under control and ensure a healthy, happy environment for all our students!
