Newsletter Week 8, Term 1

St Michael's Catholic School, Wednesday 26 March

DEPUTY PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE

Tēnā koutou kātoa e te whānau,

Our tamariki had an amazing time at the Colour Fun Run yesterday! It was fantastic to see so many of our students and whānau involved, creating such a positive and energetic atmosphere. We raised 5607.00 and will be using these funds to upgrade our playground—an exciting development for our school! A huge congratulations to Zara from Eden 6, who raised the most money. Ka pai, Zara! Thank you to all families for your fundraising efforts for our little school!

Our recent Swimming Sports was a wonderful showcase of our students’ confidence and effort in the water. Every child gave something a go, which was amazing to see! A huge thank you to St Mary's School for organising this event and inviting us along—it was a fantastic experience for our tamariki. We also want to give a special shout-out to our parent helpers, who braved the pool all day to support our swimmers.

GRIP Leadership Conference
Our four student leaders attended the GRIP Leadership Conference in Rotorua, where they had an amazing day learning about what it takes to be a great leader. They’ve come back full of ideas and inspiration to help support our tamariki, teachers, and school.

12:30 Finish on Thursday & Friday
A reminder that school will finish at 12:30 PM on Thursday and Friday this week as our teachers will be attending a Mathematics PLD led by the Ministry of Education. If your child cannot be picked up early, please inform their teacher as we will have teacher aides available to supervise those who need to stay until the usual finishing time.

New Bell Times Update
Following our recent bell trial and feedback, we are implementing new bell times to support smooth transitions during the school day:
  • Morning Tea: 10:30 – 10:55 AM (Eating time: 10:30 – 10:40 AM)
  • Lunch: 1:00 – 1:45 PM (Eating time: 1:00 – 1:10 PM)
Thank you for your ongoing support as we make these adjustments for the benefit of our tamariki.

Ngā mihi nui,
Shayla O'Neill
Tumuaki Tuarua
Deputy Principal

School Attendance

The Ministry of Education remains focused on student attendance in 2025, setting the standard for regular attendance at 📅 90% regular attendance. St Michael's School is committed to this goal and encourages our school community to support this important initiative.
As a school, we are required to report daily to the Ministry on:
  • The number of students present
  • The number of students arriving late
  • 🏥 The number of students with justified absences (e.g., due to illness or an approved reason)
  • ⚠️ The number of students with unjustified absences (e.g., family holidays during term time or unexplained absences)
To help us maintain accurate records and support your child's regular attendance, we kindly ask for your cooperation with the following:
  • Be on time! Ensure your child arrives at school on time each day (8.50am Bell). Punctuality is essential for learning and sets them up for a successful day.
  • 📱 Report absences easily! If your child is unwell or unable to attend school, please notify us early in the morning using the @School app. This helps us keep accurate records and minimizes the need for follow-up. If you do not respond to the absentee text or answer your phone when we call, the absence will be recorded as unjustified.
  • 🚫 Unjustified absences count! Please note that holidays taken during term time are recorded as unjustified absences and count against the 90% attendance target.
