Newsletter Week 3, Term 3

St Michael's Catholic School, Wednesday 7 August

PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE

Tēnā koutou kātoa e te whānau,
Welcome to Week 3 of Term 3! We have a lot of exciting activities and events coming up, and we’re thrilled to share them with you.

The football program with Anna continues every Friday, providing our students with the opportunity to develop their skills and enjoy the game. We are delighted with the enthusiasm and progress shown by our budding footballers. Keep up the great work, team!

Our gymnastics team is in full swing, preparing for the Rotorua Schools Competition at the end of the month. A special thank you to Val Cooney for her unwavering support and dedication to our gymnasts. Your guidance and encouragement make all the difference.

We are excited to participate in the Faith-based Kāhui Ako Ahurei at John Paul College at the end of the month. This event is a wonderful opportunity for our students to connect and celebrate their faith through kapa haka. We extend our heartfelt thanks to Whare from John Paul College for supporting our roopu in this meaningful event.

On August 13th, some of our senior students will be competing in the Central Bay of Plenty Primary Schools Sports Day. We are proud to have one hockey team and two football teams representing us. Best of luck to all our athletes – give it your all and have fun!

We are excited to announce that the senior students will be attending a performance from the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra (NZSO) on Wednesday, 28 August, from 1.15pm to 2.15pm at the Sir Howard Morrison Centre. This concert promises to inspire curiosity and creativity as students connect with the NZSO players in an unforgettable experience.

Young Vinnies - Our Senior Catholic Character leader is keen to start up a Young Vinnies Group at St Michael's. Have a chat to your child about the benefits of joining Young Vinnies. Young Vinnies is the youth arm of the St. Vincent de Paul Society, a Catholic organisation dedicated to helping those in need. It focuses on engaging young people in social justice, community service, and charitable activities, fostering a spirit of compassion and empathy.

Key Aspects of Young Vinnies:
1. Service to Others:
Young Vinnies members participate in various community service projects such as visiting nursing homes, helping the homeless, and supporting local food banks. They engage in activities aimed at raising awareness and advocating for social justice issues, including poverty, homelessness, and inequality.
2. Personal Development:
Young Vinnies provides opportunities for young people to develop leadership skills by organising and leading service projects. Members work together on projects, fostering a sense of teamwork and collaboration. Through direct service and interactions with those in need, young people develop a deeper understanding of empathy and compassion.
3. Faith in Action:
Young Vinnies encourages members to live out their Christian values by serving others and working towards social justice. Participation in Young Vinnies activities often includes opportunities for spiritual reflection and growth, helping young people to integrate their faith into their daily lives.

Thank you to all those who support our students in their various endeavors. Thank you for your ongoing support and involvement in our school community.

Ngā mihi nui,

Have a great week whanau,

Rachael McLanachan

Weekly Scripture Reflections:
What Bible passages have you read or discussed with your child this week?
How can you relate the week's Gospel reading to everyday life and Catholic values?

Sunday 11 August Gospel, John 6:41-51

Meanwhile the Jews were complaining to each other about him, because he had said, 'I am the bread that has come down from heaven.' They were saying, 'Surely this is Jesus son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know. How can he now say, "I have come down from heaven?" '
Jesus said in reply to them, 'Stop complaining to each other. 'No one can come to me unless drawn by the Father who sent me, and I will raise that person up on the last day.
It is written in the prophets: They will all be taught by God; everyone who has listened to the Father, and learnt from him, comes to me. Not that anybody has seen the Father, except him who has his being from God: he has seen the Father. In all truth I tell you, everyone who believes has eternal life. I am the bread of life. Your fathers ate manna in the desert and they are dead; but this is the bread which comes down from heaven, so that a person may eat it and not die. I am the living bread which has come down from heaven. Anyone who eats this bread will live for ever; and the bread that I shall give is my flesh, for the life of the world.'

Explanation for Children:

1. Jesus is Special: Imagine you have a friend who is so special that he says he came from a very special place, like heaven. Some people didn't believe Jesus because they thought they knew him well and knew his family. They wondered, "How can he be from heaven when we know his parents?"
2. Believing in Jesus: Jesus told people to stop complaining and to trust him. He said that people can only come to him if God helps them to understand who he is.
3. The Bread of Life: Jesus said he is the "bread of life." Bread is food that keeps us alive, but Jesus is talking about something much more important. He means that by believing in him and following him, we will have a special kind of life that lasts forever.
4. Trusting Jesus Gives Us Eternal Life: When Jesus says, "I am the living bread which has come down from heaven," he means that he came to give us life forever with God. By believing in him and living like he taught us, we can have this forever life.

Lessons for children:

1. Trusting in Jesus:
  • Trusting Jesus helps us feel loved and protected, even when things are tough.
  • We can talk to Jesus through prayer and tell him our worries, knowing he listens and cares.
2. Being Kind and Loving:
  • Jesus teaches us to be kind to others, just like he is kind to us.
  • We can share what we have with those in need, like how Jesus shared himself with us.
3. Following Jesus’ Teachings:
  • By following Jesus' teachings, we learn to be better friends, siblings, and students.
  • We learn to forgive others, just like Jesus forgives us.
4. Eternal Hope:
  • Believing in Jesus gives us hope that no matter what happens, we have a special place with God forever.
  • This hope helps us stay strong and positive, knowing Jesus is always with us.
Our STAR Values of Service, Tika, Aroha and Respect, reminds our school community of the way of Jesus.

Welcome to new family

A very warm welcome to the following new family. We hope you will enjoy your time with us at St Michael's School.

Odelia Hayes (The Ark 8)

If you know of families with children due to start school, please direct them to our wonderful Cristy in the school office.

Lateness to school

We want to remind everyone about the importance of arriving at school on time. Consistent lateness can have a significant impact on your child's learning and overall school experience.

How Lateness Affects Your Child:
  • Missed Learning: Key instructions and lessons often occur first thing in the morning. Missing these can affect your child's understanding and progress.
  • Routine Disruption: Arriving late can disrupt your child's routine, making it harder for them to settle into the school day.
  • Social Impact: Lateness can affect your child's ability to engage with their peers and participate fully in class activities.
Tips to Encourage Punctuality:
  • Set a consistent bedtime.
  • Prepare clothes, bags, and lunches the night before.
  • Establish a morning routine.
If your child does arrive late, please ensure they check in at the office to confirm their attendance. We appreciate your support in ensuring your child arrives on time every day.
Thank you for your cooperation.

Health & Safety

Illness and Absence:
  • Keep your child at home if they are feeling unwell to prevent the spread of illness.
  • Notify the school office if your child will be absent due to illness or other reasons.
Free Headlice and Scabies Treatment at Woolworths Pharmacy Rotorua:

We here at Woolworths Pharmacy Rotorua (Formerly Countdown Pharmacy Rotorua) would like to inform that our pharmacy is now able to provide free treatments for Headlice and Scabies for anyone over the age of 2 via a short pharmacist consultation (usually 5-10 minutes).

This service is funded and will enable the public to more easily access Headlice and Scabies treatments without prescription and also remove cost-related barriers. No appointments are needed. The person needing the treatment or their parent/s can just come into our pharmacy and ask for the consultation and the pharmacist will provide a private room for the short consult, where the pharmacist will check the symptoms, ask a few relevant questions, determine if the product is suitable and provide the relevant product with advice, or refer to doctor if needed.

For the Headlice service, we are able to provide 1 bottle of Headlice treatment lotion and a lice comb for each person in the household needing treatment.

For the Scabies service, we are able to provide 2 bottles of Anti-scabies lotion for each person in the household, plus a tube of anti-itch cream if needed.

The service is completely free of charge and in addition to the products, relevant information leaflets will be provided.

Spotlight on Learning

A lovely piece of descriptive writing by Amelia Knight in Galilee 1.

When I went to the Aquatics with my cousins
I saw kids with smiles of glee.
I heard playful splashes against the water.
I smelt the hot food from the cafe.
I tasted the saltiness from the pool, it was as salty as ocean water.
I felt the tiny waves rushing on my body and it felt so relaxed.
I felt so heavy when I got out of the pool, as heavy as a rock!
I wondered how long the other kids stayed there!
