Newsletter Week 4, Term 2
St Michael's Catholic School, Wednesday 21st May
PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
Tēnā koutou kātoa e te whānau,
We’re well into Term 2 now and with the cooler weather settling in, it’s a good reminder to make sure our tamariki are wrapped up warm to ward off those winter bugs. A quick reminder that children can wear a polyprop under their school T-shirt and long pants are available from the Uniform Shop. Girls are also welcome to wear tights under their skort to help keep the chill out.
Last week, Shayla and I were lucky enough to head over to Canberra on a study tour, visiting a range of Catholic schools as part of the Catalyst initiative. It was an incredible opportunity to see high-impact teaching practices in action and connect with other leaders in Catholic education. We’ve come back with plenty of fresh ideas and inspiration for how we can continue to grow learning opportunities for our awesome St Michael’s kids.
Cross Country at the Redwoods – This Friday! This Friday, our Year 4–6 tamariki will be heading to the Redwoods for the annual cross country event with St Mary’s. We are very grateful to the St Mary’s team for including us — it’s always a fantastic day for our tamariki with plenty of fresh air, and friendly competition!
Please make sure children come dressed in their PE gear, with a drink bottle and a good breakfast under their belt.
A reminder that parents will need to pick up their child from the Redwoods carpark at 2:30pm. Children catching a school bus or being collected by an after-school care service will be brought back to school for pick-up at 2:30pm. We’re looking forward to seeing everyone give it their best.
Readathon Reminder – Keep Up the Great Reading! We hope all our Readathon superstars are getting stuck into as many books as they can before the end of the month! It’s such a fun way for our tamariki to support our parish as they work hard to raise funds for a much-needed new church roof.
We’ve already sent home sponsorship forms and reading logs, so keep encouraging your children to read, read, read—and gather those sponsors. Every little bit helps, and we’re so proud of the effort going in already!
We have Class Mass this Thursday at 8:30am at St Michael's Catholic Church with Galilee 4 and Eden 6. Whānau are warmly invited to come along and join us in prayer and reflection.
Stay warm, stay well, and thank you for your ongoing support.

Attendance Dues Update
We would like to inform you that due to unforeseen circumstances, we are currently experiencing delays in processing times for financial assistance applications. Please rest assured that we have received your applications, and they are safely in our system.
Our Attendance Dues team at the Catholic Diocese of Hamilton is working diligently to ensure that all applications are processed as quickly and efficiently as possible.
Please be reminded that, unless otherwise agreed, we do require a small regular payment to start before the application can be processed.
We appreciate your patience and understanding during this time.

Health & Safety
As we settle into Term 2, the colder and wetter days have certainly arrived. Please make sure children come to school with warm clothing and a raincoat—named items are especially helpful for avoiding the lost property pile!
Children are welcome to wear a thermal under their school t-shirt, and winter uniform trousers are available from the uniform shop if needed.
We’re seeing a few more sniffles around, so if your child is unwell—especially with a fever, cough, sore throat, or tummy upset—please keep them home to rest and recover.
If your child will be away, remember to let us know via the app or by contacting the office.
A little favour— if you’re able to send along a box of tissues to your child’s classroom, it would be much appreciated. There are lots of noses to be wiped at the moment!

Spotlight On Learning

These beautiful pieces of artwork were created by the students in Galilee 1. Inspired by stained glass windows, each design reflects the students’ creativity and attention to detail. What a wonderful way to combine art with storytelling and reflection!

Way to Play – Tauranga and Rotorua it’s your turn in June 2025!
For family/whānau, early childhood teachers, health professionals, or anyone else living or working with young children on autism spectrum.
Way to Play is a fun one-day introduction to playing joyously with a child on the autism spectrum.
Way to play has been specifically designed for people directly involved with a young autistic child. Adults are often left bewildered when trying to play with the child. The course offers some simple, easy to use, practical strategies to begin playing joyously together. Having fun playing together is the focus. Through ‘Way to Play’, we aim to help you understand why young autistic tamariki may find social interaction stressful, how to overcome that stress, and to show you the simple steps to joyful and purposeful play.
